Direct to the consumer or DIY Orthodontics are being heavily advertised on Facebook and other social media platforms. On-line firms are offering to supply orthodontic treatments at bargain-basement prices (mainly clear retainers mimicking the market leader Invisalign) without a trained and accredited clinician examination.
Dr Nigel Cater Chief Executive of the Oral Health Foundation said, “My clinical view is that orthodontics should always involve face-to-face contact with a trained professional.”
My own opinion is that a personal consultation provides a customized treatment plan with options to close spaces, eliminate overcrowding and aligning upper and lower tooth arches. As well as ensuring the bite is aligned to prevent future problems including damage to teeth.
Also, I would never commence treatment without viewing a recent OPG x-ray to ensure there are not issues below the surface. I listen to patient’s concerns and provide answers to their questions and solutions to their concerns.
If in doubt seek the advice of more than one qualified orthodontist and remember teeth can move both ways i.e. not only the way you would like them to and this could worsen the situation causing stress and involve longer and more expensive treatment to correct.
